The Battle of Minden, 1 August 1759 (coloured engraving)

3062275 The Battle of Minden, 1 August 1759 (coloured engraving) by English School, (18th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Tinted line engraving, artist unknown, published by Carrington Bowles, 1759 (c). The battle of Minden or Thornhausen where the allied army obtained a glorious victory over the french army.
Minden, in Germany, was one of the greatest Allied victories of the Seven Years War (1756-1763). After a series of minor successes, a French army about 44, 000 strong confronted an Anglo-Hanoverian force of about 37, 000.
Owing to a misunderstanding, the Allied infantry attacked prematurely, in the face of devastating French artillery fire, losing one-third of its men in the process. Despite these losses, the Allied battalions routed the French cavalry which opposed them. This feat prompted the French commander, Marshal Contades, to remark, I never thought to see a single line of infantry break through three lines of cavalry ranked in order of battle, and tumble them to ruin.
However, when the Allied cavalry was ordered to charge to complete the victory, its commander, Lord George Sackville, refused to give the order to advance, and the opportunity was wasted.
The battle lasted about five hours. The French lost about 7-10, 000 men, the Allies about 3, 000, mostly amongst their attacking infantry. British regiments which participated in the attack still celebrate Minden Day in honour of their predecessors achievements.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving captures the historic Battle of Minden, which took place on 1 August 1759 during the Seven Years War. The image showcases a pivotal moment in the battle where the Allied army achieved a glorious victory over their French counterparts. The artwork depicts the intense clash between two formidable forces. The Allied infantry, despite attacking prematurely and suffering heavy losses from devastating French artillery fire, managed to rout the opposing French cavalry. This remarkable feat astonished even Marshal Contades, who remarked that he never expected to witness such an extraordinary display of bravery and skill. However, as victory seemed within reach, Lord George Sackville, commander of the Allied cavalry, controversially refused to order his troops to charge forward. This missed opportunity ultimately prevented complete triumph for the Allies. Lasting approximately five hours, this battle resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The French lost around 7-10 thousand men while the Allies suffered about 3 thousand casualties primarily among their attacking infantry. Today, British regiments involved in this heroic assault commemorate Minden Day as a tribute to their predecessors' achievements on that fateful day. This print serves as a testament to not only an important military engagement but also highlights moments of valor and missed opportunities that shaped history during this tumultuous period.
