Topfschlagen / Pot Hitting (colour litho)

8666209 Topfschlagen / Pot Hitting (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Topfschlagen. Translation: Pot Hitting. In many German districts, traditional dances or games for the harvest festival have survived. This also includes rooster beating or pot hitting, originally a cultic custom, whereby the rooster was hidden in the pit under a pot. Blindfolded, the pot had to be smashed in three strokes with the flail. The first winner received the rooster as a prize. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph captures the traditional German game of Topfschlagen, or Pot Hitting, as illustrated by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) in 1934. The scene depicts a group of participants blindfolded and eagerly swinging a Dreschflegel to smash a pot hiding a rooster underneath. Topfschlagen is one of many customs that have been preserved in various German regions for harvest festivals. Originally a cultic ritual, the game involves skill and luck as players must rely on their senses to locate and break the pot in three precise strikes. The intricate details and lively expressions captured in this print bring to life the excitement and competitiveness of this age-old tradition. The winner of the game would be rewarded with the prized rooster hidden beneath the pot, adding an element of suspense and anticipation to the festivities. This artwork serves as a visual reminder of cultural practices that have been passed down through generations, highlighting the importance of preserving traditions that connect communities and celebrate shared heritage. The vivid colours and dynamic composition make this piece a captivating representation of folklore and customs from Germany's rich cultural history.
