Reitschule / Riding School (colour litho)

8666176 Reitschule / Riding School (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Reitschule. Translation: Riding School. Along with fencing, hunting and dancing, riding was one of the elements of education for the fine cavalier in the days of court etiquette. The name Kavalier (horseman) shows this. He learned to ride the riding high school, which was broken down into schools on earth (i.e., walk and gallop riding) and above the earth (difficult leaps and artistic turns). Vienna still has its Spanish riding school today. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).); © Look and Learn

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning colour lithograph captures the elegance and tradition of the Reitschule, or Riding School, in all its glory. Created by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) in the early 20th century, this print beautifully depicts the art of riding as a key element of education for the refined cavalier. In a time when court etiquette dictated one's every move, riding was considered just as important as fencing, hunting, and dancing. The name "Kavalier" itself signifies a horseman, highlighting the significance of equestrian skills in defining one's social status. The image showcases riders mastering both earthly maneuvers like walking and galloping, as well as more challenging aerial feats such as difficult jumps and intricate turns. This division into schools on earth and above it speaks to the complexity and skill required to excel in this noble pursuit. Even today, Vienna's Spanish Riding School continues to uphold these centuries-old traditions with grace and precision. Through this lithograph from Deutsche Kulturbilder (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld), we are transported back in time to an era where horsemanship was not just a pastime but a symbol of refinement and sophistication.
