In 1899 General Sir Redvers Buller, who was Commander-in-Chief of the forces in South Africa, sanctioned the raising of a mounted corps, the South African Light Horse. It consisted of British and Colonial personnel, together with some Texan cowboys. Eight squadrons, each of 100 men, were rapidly raised and a second regiment, Roberts Horse was recruited from the Cape Town area. By 1900 it numbered 550 officers and men.); © National Army Museum
