The coatee, meaning a small coat, is a 19th century body garment closed in front and cut across the waist leaving only small skirts behind. This short-tailed coatee was worn by Private William Sewell (1830-1910) during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Other items in the collection belonging to Private Sewell are his forage cap and his spurs.
William Sewell enlisted in the Army in 1851 and was badly wounded at the Battle of Balaklava during the Charge of the Light Brigade on 25 October 1854. The injury to his head was so severe that for the remainder of his life a plate was fixed over the wound. He left the Army as a sergeant and became a coachman, dying in Liverpool.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite piece of history - the Other ranks short-tailed coatee from 1855. This unique garment, worn by Private William Sewell during the Crimean War, is a testament to the fashion and style of 19th-century military attire. The coatee, a small coat closed in front and cut across the waist with only small skirts at the back, was a popular choice for soldiers during this era. It symbolized their dedication and bravery on the battlefield. Alongside this remarkable coatee, Private Sewell's collection also includes his forage cap and spurs. Private William Sewell enlisted in the Army in 1851 and fought valiantly during numerous battles. However, it was at the Battle of Balaklava that he sustained a severe head injury while charging with the Light Brigade on October 25th, 1854. The impact was so grave that he carried a plate fixed over his wound for life. Despite leaving the Army as a sergeant due to his injuries, Private Sewell continued to lead an extraordinary life as a coachman before passing away in Liverpool. His story serves as a reminder of both sacrifice and resilience. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this print allows us to appreciate not only its historical significance but also pay homage to all soldiers who have bravely faced battle throughout time.
