The volunteer Yeomanry cavalry units were originally formed in the 1790s as a response to the invasion threat from Revolutionary France. However, they were also used to support the civil authority to put down political and social disturbances. This continued until the mid-19th century when police forces took over this role. The yeomanry then concentrated on local defence.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Officers shako of the Gloucestershire Yeomanry, dating back to approximately 1848. The Gloucestershire Yeomanry was one of many volunteer cavalry units established in response to the invasion threat from Revolutionary France during the late 18th century. However, their duties extended beyond military defense as they were also called upon to assist civil authorities in quelling political and social disturbances. As police forces gradually assumed this role in the mid-19th century, the yeomanry shifted their focus towards local defense. The shako itself is a striking symbol of authority and prestige within this esteemed cavalry unit. Its tall structure and distinctive design exude an air of strength and discipline that befits these dedicated officers. This particular piece exemplifies the meticulous craftsmanship prevalent during this era. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, this photograph allows us a glimpse into history—a testament to both past conflicts and societal changes. It serves as a reminder of how military organizations have adapted over time while retaining their commitment to safeguarding communities. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured not only the physicality but also the essence behind this remarkable artifact, offering viewers an opportunity to appreciate its historical significance for generations to come.
