EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent helmet badge from the 12th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry, dating back to the years 1861-1901. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this gilt badge is an exquisite piece of artistry. The design features the regimental number XII enclosed within a garter adorned with the inscription "Bengal Cavalry" all topped by an Imperial Crown. The history behind this remarkable artifact is equally fascinating. Formed during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the 12th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry played significant roles in various campaigns and wars throughout its existence. Notably, it participated in both the Abyssinian campaign of 1868 and the 2nd Afghan War between 1878 and 1880. After serving valiantly during World War One in Mesopotamia (1914-1918), this esteemed regiment merged with another distinguished unit, namely, the 11th Prince of Wales's Own Lancers in 1921. Together they formed a new entity known as the illustrious "5th King Edward's Own Probyn's Horse". Preserved at London's National Army Museum as part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection, this photograph immortalizes not only a stunning piece but also pays homage to an extraordinary chapter in military history. With its intricate details and rich historical significance, this image serves as a testament to courage and valor that resonates through time.
