EDITORS COMMENTS
The Ghuznee Medal 1839, featuring Major-General Sir Abraham Roberts, is a captivating print that captures the essence of bravery and honor. This metal artifact, housed in the National Army Museum in London, holds great historical significance. Major-General Sir Abraham Roberts was an esteemed military leader who commanded the 4th Brigade during the invasion of Afghanistan. The photograph showcases his distinguished presence and unwavering determination. In June 1839, he fought valiantly at Ghazni and was awarded the prestigious Ghuznee Medal alongside all participating troops. However, it wasn't just this medal that adorned his chest. Shah Shujah recognized Roberts' exceptional service by decorating him with the Order of the Dooranee Empire. Furthermore, Queen Victoria bestowed upon him the title of Commander of the Bath for his remarkable contributions to their nation's cause. Despite these accolades, Roberts found himself disillusioned with the subsequent occupation of Afghanistan. He courageously voiced his concerns to his superiors but unfortunately went unheard. Frustrated by their lack of response or action towards rectifying matters on Afghan soil, he made a difficult decision: resigning from his appointment in 1840. This powerful image encapsulates not only Major-General Sir Abraham Roberts' extraordinary military career but also highlights how even decorated heroes can be driven to take a stand when they believe in what is right. It serves as a reminder that true valor lies not only in battle but also in standing up for one's principles and convictions
