This portrait probably depicts John Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll (1777-1847), who was an ensign in the 3rd Foot Guards from 1797 and a captain from 1799. Campbell served under Sir Ralph Abercromby in the Netherlands during the French Revolutionary Wars of 1792-1802. He retired due to ill health in 1801, but was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the Argyll Volunteers in 1803 and Colonel of the Argyll and Bute Militia from 1809.
