Photograph by Bourne and Shepherd, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.
The 92nd (Gordon) Highlanders was one of General Roberts most trusted regiments in the Kabul Field Force. Their smartness, exhibited here during a church parade, was as noteworthy as their bravery; not all regiments took their full dress uniforms with them on campaign. Indeed, as the Gordons approached the end of their gruelling march to Kandahar in August 1880, and the garrison heliographed to ask what they needed, the regiments adjutant replied asking that all the pipeclay (leather whitener) in Kandahar be bought up for him. This was done, and on 2 September 1880, the day after the Battle of Kandahar, the 92nd shone distinguished from the other regiments by belts as white as those of the Queens guard at St Jamess.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Church Parade. 92nd Highlanders, 1879" captures a moment of pride and discipline within the 92nd (Gordon) Highlanders regiment during the 2nd Afghan War. Taken by Bourne & Shepherd, this image showcases the regiment's smartness and bravery as they participate in a church parade in camp. Known as one of General Roberts' most trusted regiments in the Kabul Field Force, the Gordon Highlanders stood out not only for their courage but also for their attention to detail. Unlike other regiments who did not bring their full dress uniforms on campaign, the Gordons took great care in maintaining their appearance even amidst grueling marches. In fact, when nearing Kandahar after an arduous journey in August 1880, the regiment requested all available pipeclay (leather whitener) be bought up for them. This request was fulfilled, resulting in belts as white as those worn by Queen's guards at St James's Palace. This photograph is part of an album containing 115 images taken by Bourne and Shepherd between 1878-1880. It is associated with Major-General Frederick Sleigh Roberts and is housed at the National Army Museum in London. Through this image, we are transported back to a significant period of military history where dedication to duty and impeccable presentation were held dear by soldiers like those depicted here from the esteemed Gordon Highlanders.
