EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo captures a significant moment in history - the unveiling of the Guards Division memorial by Field Marshal His Royal Highness The Duke of Connaught in 1926. Taken by Christina Broom, also known as Mrs Albert Broom, who was the official photographer to the Household Brigade from 1904 to 1939, this image showcases her talent for capturing poignant moments. The Guards Division Memorial, located near Horse Guards Parade in London, is a remarkable cenotaph designed by Harold Charlton Bradshaw. It features an obelisk made of Portland stone on a base adorned with five bronze sculptures representing each of the Guards Regiments. These sculptures were skillfully crafted by Gilbert Ledward. Notably, Bradshaw's design expertise extended beyond this memorial; he also created other notable First World War memorials such as the Cambrai Memorial in France and the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing in Belgium. In this photograph, we witness Field Marshal His Royal Highness The Duke of Connaught standing proudly at the center of attention during this solemn ceremony. This event marked an important milestone for both military history and remembrance culture. Preserved by Bridgeman Images and housed at the National Army Museum in London, this print serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice and valor displayed by those who served their country within these esteemed regiments.
