EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable "Cat Coffin" from the Egyptian Ptolemaic Period. Created between 305-30 BC, this bronze, hollow cast sculpture stands at an impressive height of 51.00 cm with dimensions of 14.10 cm in width and 24.00 cm in depth. Housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this artifact holds great historical significance. Despite cats being considered a quintessentially Egyptian animal, their worship did not emerge until later in Egyptian history. This particular statue was crafted to serve as a final resting place for a mummified sacred cat. The coffin itself is hollow and features an open bottom, allowing for the placement of the feline remains. One notable detail is how the cat's tail elegantly curls around its right side—a characteristic often seen in ancient depictions of these revered creatures. The John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust generously gifted this extraordinary piece to the museum's collection. As an object that represents both artistry and religious devotion during ancient times, it offers viewers a glimpse into Egypt's rich cultural heritage. Through this evocative image captured by Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform, we are transported back to a time when cats held immense reverence within Egyptian society—an enduring symbol that continues to captivate our imaginations today.
