The Bloody Corpus, 1894 - A Glimpse into the Catalan Revolt
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, titled "The Bloody Corpus" takes us back to a significant event in Spanish history - the Catalan Revolt of 1640. Captured by an anonymous Spanish School artist from the 19th century, this colour lithograph depicts the tragic demise of Dalmau de Queralt, Count of Santa Coloma. At the foot of Montjuic, on that fateful day of June 7th, 1640, Death himself seems to have descended upon Catalonia. The count, who had served as viceroy during turbulent times between 1638 and 1640, fell victim to a mob of rebel mutineers known as reapers. Their uprising against his authority marked a pivotal moment in this bloody revolt. The image portrays chaos and violence with striking detail. The hillside is teeming with European faces contorted by anger and defiance. As we gaze at this scene frozen in time through Bridgeman Images' lens, we witness the count's final moments - dying at the hands of those he once governed. "The Bloody Corpus" serves as a haunting reminder of Spain's tumultuous past and its struggle for independence. It captures not only historical significance but also showcases artistic mastery through its vivid colours and intricate details. This print invites us to reflect on rebellion's consequences while honoring those whose lives were lost during these turbulent times in Europe's history.
