EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating woodblock print captures a dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Keisei Kakehashi Monogatari". The triptych features four actors in elaborate costumes, each embodying a different character with their unique expressions and postures. In the center of the composition stands Ichikawa Ebijōrō I as Ukisu no Iwamatsu, gripping a short axe-like weapon. He confronts Arashi Kitsusaburō II as the Farmer Jōsaku, who is seen with his hand on his sword-hilt, ready to defend himself. On the left side of the print, Sawamura Kunitarō II portrays Jōsaku's Wife Okinu (Nyūbō), kneeling protectively over her child. The setting is enhanced by Gigado Ashiyuki's skillful use of perspective and detail. Through branches of a willow tree, we catch glimpses of Mount Fuji in the distance and an enormous setting sun that adds an air of impending drama to the scene. The print was created during Japan's Edo period (1603-1868) by Gigado Ashiyuki. It showcases not only his artistic talent but also highlights traditional Japanese theater and storytelling techniques through its dynamic composition. Now housed at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK, this colorful woodblock print offers viewers a glimpse into both historical Japanese culture and theatrical artistry. Its vivid colors and intricate details continue to captivate audiences today as they did when it was first produced centuries ago.
