This evocative engraving captures the fierce determination of Giuseppina di Barcelona, a Sicilian heroine who played a pivotal role in the historic events of 1860 in Catania, Sicily. As the Bourbon rule of the Two Sicilies came to an end and the Kingdom of Italy began to take shape, Giuseppina, also known as Giuseppina Garibaldi or Giuseppina di Marino, stood defiantly against the Neapolitan forces. With a cannon in hand, she manned the fortifications of the city, bravely resisting the enemy's advance. The scene depicted in this engraving is believed to have taken place during the Battle of Catania, which took place on May 11, 1860. The city had been under siege for several days, and Giuseppina, inspired by the revolutionary spirit of Giuseppe Garibaldi, had joined the Sicilian volunteers to defend her homeland. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Sicilians held their ground, inflicting heavy losses on the Neapolitans. Giuseppina di Barcelona's bravery and courage became the stuff of legend. She was hailed as a symbol of Sicilian resistance and a beacon of hope for the Italian unification movement. Her actions inspired countless others to join the cause, and her legacy continues to be celebrated in Italy to this day.
