Born in Scotland, Fergusson joined the British Army in 1883 and rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected military figures of his time. He served in various campaigns, including the Second Boer War and the First World War, where he earned several decorations for his bravery and leadership. In 1935, Fergusson was appointed as the third Governor-General of New Zealand, a role he held until 1951.
