EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Field-Marshal Sir John French (1852-1925) is seen leaving HMS Sentinel as he arrives at Bapaume, Northern France, on August 14, 1914. At the time, Sir John was commanding the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) during the early stages of the First World War. Dressed in his full military uniform, the Field-Marshal exudes a sense of determination and resolve as he prepares to disembark from the ship and lead his troops into battle. The image captures a pivotal moment in world history, as the Great War was about to engulf Europe and the world in a conflict that would last for over four years. The British Army, under the command of Sir John French, was one of the first major military forces to arrive on the continent, and its presence helped to shape the early course of the war. Bapaume, a small town in northern France, would become a significant battleground in the coming months, with the First Battle of the Somme taking place just a few miles to the south in 1916. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War, and the crucial role played by their commanders in shaping the course of the conflict. Sir John French would go on to lead the BEF until December 1915, when he was replaced by General Douglas Haig. Despite his eventual removal from command, Sir John's arrival at Bapaume marked the beginning of a long and distinguished military career, which saw him rise to the rank of Field-Marshal and earn a knighthood for his service to his country.
