Field-Marshal Lord French (1852-1925) inspecting some 10, 000 volunteers of numerous London regiments in Hyde Park, London, during the First World War. Lord French had fought in both the Sudanese and Boer wars of the previous century and took command of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914. He became Commander-in-Chief of the home forces in 1915 and after the war was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Date: 1916
