This evocative photograph captures the moment of pride and preparation as Field-Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, 1st Baron Haig of Bemersyde, 1st Viscount Haig of Wilton and Bemersyde, 1st Earl Haig of Rawtenstall and Penrith, 1st Marquess of Londonderry and 1st Earl Haig of Monk's Houghton, 1st Baronet of Bemersyde, GCB, OM, GCVO, DSO, PC (1861-1928), Inspector General of the British Army, inspects over 10,000 volunteers of numerous London regiments in Hyde Park during the First World War in 1916. Lord French, as he was then known, had a distinguished military career that spanned over half a century, having fought in the Sudanese War of 1896 and the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. He took command of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914 and became Commander-in-Chief of the home forces in 1915. After the war, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
