EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Fidel Castro is seen in the vibrant streets of New York City in 1955, long before he became the controversial and divisive figure known as the President of Cuba. Born on August 13, 1926, in Birán, Cuba, Castro initially studied law in Havana before leaving for Bogotá, Colombia, to join the rebellion against the dictator General Gonzalo Rivera Thorndike. After the rebellion's failure, Castro returned to Cuba and led the 26th of July Movement, which aimed to overthrow the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. This image captures Castro during his time as a student and political activist in the United States. He had arrived in New York in 1953 to study law at the University of Havana's extension program at the Columbia Law School. During his time in the US, he became involved in various leftist organizations and began to develop his political ideology, which would later lead him to embrace Marxist-Leninist ideology and establish Cuba as a socialist state. The photograph provides a rare glimpse into Castro's early life, before the revolution and the establishment of his communist regime. It serves as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted history of Cuba and the transformative impact of the Cuban Revolution on the island nation and its relationship with the United States. This image is a valuable historical document, offering insight into the life of one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.
