EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the archives of the RAF Museum, we see a Felixstowe F.2a aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), the forerunner of the RAF, taking to the skies above the shores of England during the First World War. The Felixstowe F.2a was a British flying boat designed and built by Felixstowe Aviation Company for anti-submarine patrol duties. With its distinctive hull and biplane wings, this seaplane was a formidable presence on the water and in the skies, capable of carrying a crew of four and armed with two Lewis guns for defense. But what sets this particular Felixstowe F.2a apart from its contemporaries is the intricate dazzle camouflage pattern adorning its hull. Dazzle camouflage, also known as disruptive camouflage, was a revolutionary new form of camouflage developed during the First World War to confuse and disorient enemy observers, making it more difficult for them to accurately estimate the size, shape, and speed of a vessel or aircraft. This innovative approach to military camouflage was pioneered by British artist Norman Wilkinson and proved highly effective, with the RAF and Royal Navy both adopting the technique extensively. In this photograph, the Felixstowe F.2a sits poised on the water, ready for takeoff on an anti-submarine patrol mission. The intricate patterns of the dazzle camouflage ripple and dance across its hull, creating a mesmerizing visual effect that continues to captivate and intrigue viewers today. The photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Allied forces during the First World War, as they sought out new ways to gain the upper hand in the face of a formidable enemy.
