EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, the rear of the Faversham Abbey remains stand proudly against the backdrop of a tranquil English landscape. Founded in 1147 by King Stephen and Queen Mathilda, this ancient monastery is steeped in history and mystery. King Stephen, known as "Stephen of Blois," was the Count of Blois and the Duke of Normandy before he ascended to the English throne in 1135. Queen Mathilda, also known as Matilda of Boulogne, was the daughter of Count Eustace III of Boulogne and was a strong and capable ruler in her own right. Together, they established Faversham Abbey, a Benedictine monastery dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Peter. The 12th century abbey was a significant religious and cultural center, attracting pilgrims from far and wide. The remains we see today, however, are but a shadow of its former glory. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, the abbey was largely destroyed, leaving only these impressive ruins. Despite the passage of time, the remains of Faversham Abbey continue to captivate visitors with their grandeur and history. The intricate stonework, the soaring arches, and the sense of peace and quietude that pervades the site all serve as a reminder of the rich heritage of England's past. As we stand before these ancient ruins, we are transported back to a time when kings and queens ruled with power and grace, and when faith and devotion were the guiding forces of society. The rear of Faversham Abbey remains is a testament to the enduring power of history and the beauty of the English countryside.
