EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to September 1850, an era of elegance and opulence, as depicted in this photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library. The image showcases a fashionable Victorian woman, dressed in the height of autumnal style. At the heart of her ensemble is a plaid dress, featuring a unique open jacket bodice that reveals a delicate chemisette beneath. The pagoda sleeves, adorned with engageantes, add a playful touch to the otherwise formal attire. The dress is completed with a full, voluminous skirt that sweeps the ground, creating an air of grandeur. The woman's upper body is further adorned with two jackets, both boasting intricate details. The first, a mantle, is trimmed with delicate lace and boasts dentilated borders, adding a refined touch to the outfit. The second, a pardessus, is also decorated with lace and features a ribbon belt that cinches the waist, accentuating the hourglass figure. The woman's headpiece, a historical straw hat, complements the outfit perfectly, adding a touch of whimsy to the overall look. Her bracelets and cuffs, also adorned with lace, complete the ensemble, making for a truly enchanting vision of Victorian fashion. This photograph, taken in September 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the intricate details and beauty of Victorian fashion. With its open jacket bodice, pagoda sleeves, lace trim, and plaid fabric, this outfit remains a timeless symbol of elegance and sophistication.
