EDITORS COMMENTS
A Farewell Ride on Jumbo: A Nostalgic Moment at the London Zoological Gardens, 1882 This evocative photograph captures a heartwarming moment as the legendary African elephant, Jumbo, takes a group of children on a final ride at the London Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park. Born in the Sudan in 1861, Jumbo was an instant sensation when he arrived in Europe in 1865, first in Paris and later transferred to London in 1865. His popularity continued to grow, and in 1882, he was sold to P.T. Barnum for his touring circus in North America. In this poignant scene, Jumbo's gentle demeanor and size are on full display as he tenderly supports the young riders on his broad back. The children's joy and excitement are palpable as they cling to him, their faces filled with wonder and delight. The image is a poignant reminder of the connection between humans and animals, and the fascination that Jumbo inspired in people of all ages. Unfortunately, Jumbo's story did not have a happy ending. In 1885, while en route to a new exhibition in the United States, Jumbo was tragically killed by a train at a marshalling yard in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. This photograph, therefore, serves as a poignant farewell to a beloved and iconic figure in the history of zoos and circuses. The image is a testament to the historical significance of Jumbo and the role he played in captivating the public's imagination. It also highlights the importance of preserving the memories of these remarkable animals and the impact they have on our lives.
