EDITORS COMMENTS
Fanny Cerrito and Arthur Saint-Leon: A Dance Duo of 19th Century Ballet History This photograph captures the elegant and graceful dance partnership of Fanny Cerrito and Arthur Saint-Leon as they perform La Redowa Polka in 1909. Fanny Cerrito, born in 1817 in Italy, was a renowned ballerina who began her dance training at a young age under the tutelage of the famous French ballet master, Jules Perrot. She quickly rose to prominence in European ballet companies, including the Paris Opera Ballet, where she met and partnered with Arthur Saint-Leon. Arthur Saint-Leon, born in 1821 in France, was a celebrated choreographer and dancer who also trained under Perrot. He is best known for creating some of the most iconic ballets of the Romantic era, including "La Bayadère," "La Esmeralda," and "Giselle." In this photograph, Saint-Leon is shown in the prime of his career, partnering the brilliant Fanny Cerrito in a lively and playful polka. La Redowa Polka was a popular dance number in the Romantic ballet "La Bayadère," which premiered in 1877. The ballet was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Ludovic Sabouret, but Saint-Leon and Cerrito likely performed their own interpretation of the dance number in later productions. The photograph captures the duo in mid-performance, with Cerrito's flowing skirt and expressive facial expressions adding to the overall enchantment of the moment. This photograph is a rare and precious glimpse into the world of 19th century ballet, showcasing the artistry and partnership of two of the era's most celebrated figures. Fanny Cerrito and Arthur Saint-Leon's collaboration on stage brought joy and wonder to audiences, and their legacy continues to inspire and captivate dance lovers to this day.
