EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Jane Sweeney takes us on a visual journey to the heart of Bamiyan Province in Afghanistan. Standing tall amidst the rugged landscape is the watchtower of Kakrak valley, overlooking what was once an awe-inspiring site - a 21ft standing Buddha nestled within a niche. Dating back to 1030, this remarkable piece of history was surrounded by caves adorned with ancient Buddhist paintings believed to originate from the 9th and 10th centuries AD. However, time has taken its toll on these precious relics as they were removed from their original location by French archaeologists for preservation purposes. Today, they find their home in the National Museum in Kabul, serving as a testament to Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage. Jane Sweeney's photograph captures not only the remnants of this magnificent Buddha but also showcases the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds it. The Middle Eastern region exudes an aura of mystery and spirituality through its enchanting landscapes and historical landmarks like this one. Through her lens, Sweeney invites us to reflect upon both the transience of human creations and our collective responsibility towards preserving our shared past. This image serves as a poignant reminder that even though physical artifacts may be relocated or lost over time, their significance remains etched in our memories and continues to inspire generations beyond borders.
