In an unexpected turn of events during the Premier League clash between Everton and Stoke City at Goodison Park on August 27,2016, Stoke City goalkeeper Shay Given scored an own goal. The Irish shot-stopper, who had joined Stoke in the summer transfer window, found himself at the wrong end of a deflection off his own defender, resulting in an own goal that gave Everton a 1-0 lead.
