EDITORS COMMENTS
Great moment in Everton Football Club history captured in this stunning photograph by Stephen Pond: Everton's Historic FA Cup Upset at Stamford Bridge. The image shows Everton players celebrating ecstatically around their captain, Phil Neville, after he scored the winning penalty in the FA Cup fifth round replay against Chelsea on 19 February 2011. The FA Cup, one of the oldest and most prestigious domestic football competitions in the world, had long eluded Everton since their last triumph in 1995. The Toffees had reached the fifth round for the first time in five years, but the odds were stacked against them as they faced a strong Chelsea side, who were then reigning champions of the Premier League. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time, and the tension was palpable as the teams prepared for a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out. With the score at 7-7, Everton's Tim Cahill stepped up to take the eighth penalty, only to see his shot saved by Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech. The crowd at Stamford Bridge held their breath as Phil Neville, Everton's experienced and resilient captain, stepped up to take the decisive penalty. Neville calmly placed the ball on the spot and sent Cech the wrong way, sending the Everton fans into raptures. The relief and joy on the faces of the Everton players as they rushed to celebrate with their captain is evident in this powerful photograph. The FA Cup was finally coming home to Goodison Park. This iconic image encapsulates the spirit and determination of Everton Football Club and their fans, and serves as a reminder of one of the most memorable moments in the club's recent history.
