The Toffees had reached the fifth round for the first time in five years, but the odds were stacked against them as they faced a strong Chelsea side, who were then reigning champions of the Premier League. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time, and the tension was palpable as the teams prepared for a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out. With the score at 7-7, Everton's Tim Cahill stepped up to take the eighth penalty, only to see his shot saved by Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech.
