This evocative print captures the pivotal moment at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. The Greek fleet, numbering approximately 370 vessels, is depicted triumphantly confronting the Persian fleet, which is estimated to have consisted of over 1,000 ships. The Greeks, led by Themistocles, had lured the Persian fleet into the narrow straits of the Salamis Channel, allowing them to use their superior maneuverability to outflank and outmaneuver their enemies. Xerxes, the Persian king, had planned to invade Greece and conquer the city-states that had defied his rule. However, the defeat at Salamis forced him to abandon his invasion plans and retreat back to Asia. This victory not only saved Greece from certain destruction but also boosted the morale of the Greeks and marked the beginning of their eventual victory in the Greco-Persian Wars.
