1620 Bohemia Defeated Elector Friedrich Palatine Prague Thirty Years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the momentous Battle of the White Mountain, which took place near Prague in November 1620. The scene shows the defeat of Frederick V, Elector Palatine, also known as the Winter King of Bohemia, at the hands of the combined forces of the Catholic League and the Spanish Army. The Battle of the White Mountain marked a turning point in the Thirty Years' War, a prolonged and devastating conflict that raged across Europe from 1618 to 1648. The war began as a series of religious and political disputes between Protestant and Catholic forces, but quickly escalated into a wider conflict involving various European powers. Frederick V, a Protestant leader, had been elected King of Bohemia in 1619, but his rule was short-lived. In the autumn of 1620, he led an army of Protestant forces to challenge the Catholic forces of the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand II, near Prague. The Battle of the White Mountain, fought on November 8, 1620, resulted in a decisive victory for the Catholic side, and marked the end of Protestant hopes for victory in the war. The print captures the drama and chaos of the battlefield, with soldiers clashing swords and horses rearing up in the midst of the smoke and dust. At the center of the scene, Frederick V is shown on horseback, his face contorted in determination as he leads his troops into the fray. Despite his valiant efforts, he was ultimately unable to prevent his defeat. The Battle of the White Mountain had far-reaching consequences for Europe, leading to the consolidation of Catholic power and the spread of the Thirty Years' War across the continent. This print offers a powerful visual representation of a pivotal moment in European history.
