Old County Map of Inverness-shire 1654 by Johan Blaeu from the Atlas Novus

This detailed and most attractive reproduction map of Inverness-shire has been carefully art worked from a scan of an antique original. The famous firm of Dutch cartographers and publishers was established in the late 16th century by Willem Janszoon Blaeu in Amsterdam. Blaeu was a maker of globes and scientific instruments and purchased some of his early map plates from Jodocus Hondius. From this small beginning was to emerge one of the largest and most prolific map publishing houses of the seventeenth century

Monument At Loch

circa 1925: The monument at Glenfinnan, at the head of Loch Shiel, Inverness-shire, which marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720 - 1788) raised his family's standard (his grandfather was the deposed James II) at a gathering of Jacobite troops on August 19th 1745. The army he had organised for an attempt to reclaim the British throne was unsuccessful and the rebellion, known as the 45 Uprising, ended at Culloden where 1,200 Scots died. Bonnie Prince Charlie went into hiding until Flora Macdonald helped him to escape to the continent where he spent the rest of his life. (Photo by Alfred Hind Robinson/A H Robinson/Getty Images)
