Alloway Kirk, Tam o'Shanter, 1844. Creator: Unknown Featured Ayrshire Print

Alloway Kirk, Tam o'Shanter, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Alloway Kirk, Tam o'Shanter, 1844. The ruins of Alloway Auld Kirk, which dates back to the 16th century, near Alloway in Scotland. It is the scene of the witches dance in the poem "Tam o Shanter" by Robert Burns. "The auld haunted kirk", with its little enclosed burying-ground, directly skirts the road. The four walls unroofed, remain around the enclosure in which Tam saw "The dead in their last dresses", the winnock bunker in the east, "where sate the enemy" is a conspicuous feature, being a small window, divided by a thick mullion ; marks of other openings may be detected, more of them being closed up, through which the hero obtained glimpses of the unhallowed rites performed by "witches and warlocks" as preliminaries to the dance'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

Old County Map of Kyle and Mid Ayrshire 1654 by johan Blaeu from the Atlas Novus

This detailed and most attractive reproduction map of Kyle and Mid Ayrshire has been carefully art worked from a scan of an antique original. A map of the historic Scottish district of Kyle, bordering Carrick, Galloway and Clydsdale. Based on the work of the famous Scottish surveyor Timothy Pont. Map is very detailed, with the inclusion of rivers, lochs, mountains, cities, villages and castles. With decorative title and scale cartouches, the former surrounded by regional figures and their livestock. Dedication is in a fantastically detailed cartouche, the Scottish rampant lion crest flanked by two further lions and with the motto conscia virtus'. Some of the decoration has been picked out in gold. Latin text to verso. From Blaeu's Atlas Novus'. The famous firm of Dutch cartographers and publishers was established in the late 16th century by Willem Janszoon Blaeu in Amsterdam. Blaeu was a maker of globes and scientific instruments and purchased some of his early map plates from Jodocus Hondius. From this small beginning was to emerge one of the largest and most prolific map publishing houses of the seventeenth century

Aurora Borealis from Portencross Featured Ayrshire Print

Aurora Borealis from Portencross

This is Portencross castle, Portencross near the village of West Kilbride on the Ayrshire coast, I knew the northern lights were happening at this moment due to the jungle drums of FB. I had my camera set to a very high sensitivity so I could get the best out of the low light conditions which has in turn created a beam of light from the light inside the room (but it was visible to the eye). I have never noticed this light on before. At first I thought there may be someone on the roof checking out the northern lights but I saw no activity at all. This shot was taken just after 10:30
