Robert Gascoyne-Cecil Collection

Robert Gascoyne-Cecil was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1885 to 1886 and again from 1886 to 1892. He was born in London, England in 1830 and educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered politics in 1853, becoming a Member of Parliament for Stamford. In 1865 he became Secretary of State for India, then Home Secretary in 1867. In 1868 he succeeded his father as 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and held various Cabinet posts until becoming Prime Minister in 1885. During his time as Prime Minister he oversaw the passage of the Third Reform Act which extended voting rights to more people than ever before. He also negotiated an alliance with Portugal against Russia during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78). After leaving office he continued to serve as leader of the Conservative Party until 1902 when ill health forced him into retirement. He died two years later aged 74.
