George Canning Collection

George Canning (1770-1827) was a British statesman and politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from April 1827 until his death in August 1827. He was born in London, England and educated at Eton College and Oxford University. Canning entered politics in 1793, becoming a Member of Parliament for the Tory Party. He quickly rose through the ranks of government, serving as Foreign Secretary under Lord Liverpool from 1822 to 1827. During this time he negotiated several important treaties with European powers such as France and Spain. In April 1827 he became Prime Minister after the resignation of Lord Liverpool due to ill health; however, his tenure only lasted four months before he died suddenly on 8 August 1827 at Chiswick House in London. His legacy remains one of reform and modernization within British politics during a period of great change both domestically and internationally.
