Lake Onega Collection

Lake Onega is the second largest lake in Europe and one of the most beautiful. Located in northwestern Russia, it is part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway and has a total area of 9,700 square miles. The lake is fed by numerous rivers, including the Svir River, which flows into it from Lake Ladoga. It also receives water from several smaller lakes and streams. Its maximum depth reaches up to 230 feet and its average depth is about 98 feet. The lake's shoreline stretches for more than 1,500 miles with many islands dotting its surface, and is home to a variety of fish species including pike, perch, bream and roach as well as numerous birds such as cormorants and ducks. In addition to being an important source of fresh water for local communities, it also serves as an important transportation route connecting St Petersburg with Moscow via the Volga-Baltic Waterway system.
