Arles, Town Hall in Place de la Republique
Arles is a city and commune in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-RhA?ne department, of which it is a subprefecture, in the former province of Provence. A large part of the Camargue is located on the territory of the commune, making it the largest commune in Metropolitan France in terms of territory. The city has a long history, and was of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles in 1888-1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there. An international photography festival is held in the city since 1970

Arles, France - edge of ruined amphitheatre and Rhone
Arles France - a view looking past the edge of the ruined Roman amphitheatre out over the river Rhone. The amphitheatre, which has 120 arches like those pictured all around its walls, was originally built in 90AD and hosted chariot races and hand-to-hand battles. In more modern times it has hosted bullfights, plays and concerts.

The Roman arena in Arles, Provence, France, in 1666 (1882-1884)
The Roman arena in Arles, Provence, France, in 1666 (1882-1884). The Roman amphitheatre in Arles was built in the 1st century BC. Over 20, 000 spectators could be accommodated to watch chariot racing, gladiatorial combat and other entertainment. After the fall of Roman rule in Gaul, the amphitheatre was converted into a fortress. Houses were built within the structure, effectively turning it into a small town. In the 19th century at the instigation of the writer Prosper Merimee, the houses were demolished and the amphitheatre was restored to its original condition.
