Harold Abrahams wins 100m - 1924 Olympics

Harold Maurice Abrahams, CBE, ) - a British athlete of Jewish origin. He was champion in the 100 metres sprint at the 1924 Olympics in Paris (July 7th), France (a feat made legendary in the 1981 movie 'Chariots of Fire'). His time was 10.6 seconds. Jackson Scholz (second from right) was second and Arthur Porritt (far left) was third. The other named athlete was the World Record holder at the time, Charles Paddock. The other two competitors featured were fourth placed Chester Bowman (second left) and sixth placed Loren Murchison (third from right).

Engraving of a French Napoleonic soldier produced in Paris. Lancer of the French Imperial Guard. In 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo this unit formed part of General Lefebvre-Desnouettes Guard Light Cavalry Division, which took part in Marshal Ney's massed cavalry attack on the British lines. They had also been engaged at the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16th June as scouts ahead of Marshal Ney's main body

Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev and Princess Grace of Monaco

Margot Fonteyn (R) speaks 02 July 1968 with Soviet born ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev (C) and Princess Grace of Monaco in front of the stage setting for the Third International Ballet Festival in Monte Carlo. Nureyev studied at the Leningrad Choreographic School, and became a soloist with the Kirov Ballet. While touring with the Ballet in 1961, he obtained political asylum in Paris. Nureyev's virtuosity and expressiveness made him one of the greatest male dancers of the 1960's, in both classical and modern ballets. He became ballet director of the Paris Opera in 1983. / AFP PHOTO
