EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite oval portrait depicts Eudoxia Lopukhina (1672-1731), the first wife of Peter the Great of Russia (r. 1682-1725). Eudoxia was the daughter of Prince Boris Mikhailovich Lopukhin and was married to Peter in 1698, when she was just 15 years old. The marriage was arranged as part of Peter's efforts to secure alliances with the Russian nobility. However, the union was short-lived, and Peter divorced Eudoxia in 1698, reportedly due to her refusal to convert to Orthodoxy and her displeasure with the harsh realities of court life. Despite the brief nature of their marriage, Eudoxia is remembered in Russian history as an intelligent and beautiful woman. In this portrait, she is depicted wearing a sumptuous ermine-trimmed robe and a jeweled headdress, signifying her royal status. Her expression is serene and contemplative, hinting at the inner strength and resilience that allowed her to endure the challenges of life at the Russian court. The portrait was likely created around 1731, several decades after Eudoxia's divorce from Peter. It is a testament to the enduring fascination with the lives of the Russian tsars and their consorts, and serves as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of the Russian monarchy. This image is part of the extensive collection of historical prints at Mary Evans Picture Library, offering researchers, educators, and enthusiasts a wealth of visual resources for exploring the rich and varied history of Russia and its people.
