EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a poignant moment in Ethiopian history during the Italian occupation in 1935. The image portrays a group of Ethiopian men, dressed in women's clothing, being paraded through the streets as a form of public humiliation and ridicule. The men, who were seeking to evade military conscription, were forced to wear traditional Ethiopian women's attire and were mocked by the Italian soldiers and the local population. The Italian invasion of Ethiopia, also known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, began on October 3, 1935, and lasted until May 5, 1936. During this time, the Italian military implemented a scorched earth policy, destroying crops and infrastructure, and forcing the Ethiopian population into concentration camps. The conscription of Ethiopian men into the Italian army was a significant aspect of the occupation. The men in this photograph were likely subjected to this humiliating treatment as a way to deter others from attempting to evade military service. The use of women's clothing was particularly significant as it was a way to emasculate the men and undermine their masculinity. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the brutal tactics used by the Italian military during their occupation of Ethiopia and the resilience of the Ethiopian people in the face of such adversity. This photograph is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into a dark chapter in Ethiopian history. It is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the ways in which dignity and self-respect can be stripped away through acts of violence and humiliation.
