1818 1888 Mormon Erastus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph captures the distinguished visage of Erastus Snow (1818-1888), a prominent Mormon leader and pioneer settler of Utah. Taken in 1888, the year before his death, this image offers a glimpse into the later years of a remarkable life. Born on February 19, 1818, in Palmyra, New York, Snow was one of the earliest converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) under the leadership of Joseph Smith. In 1832, he joined the LDS Church and participated in the religious and organizational development of the faith. Snow's unwavering dedication to the Mormon cause led him to become a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1835, an essential governing body of the LDS Church. Snow's commitment to the Mormon faith was tested during the persecutions and trials faced by the early LDS Church. He was imprisoned multiple times and was forced to flee the United States with other Mormon settlers to establish the Mormon community in the Mexican state of Sonora in 1837. After the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, Snow remained loyal to the new LDS Church president, Brigham Young, and played a crucial role in the westward migration of the LDS Church to Utah in the late 1840s. In Utah, Snow became a respected leader and played a significant role in the development of the community. He served as a territorial delegate to the U.S. Congress and was instrumental in the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. Snow's unwavering faith and dedication to the Mormon cause earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow settlers. This CDV photograph of Erastus Snow offers a poignant reminder of the remarkable life of a man who played a pivotal role in the history of the Mormon Church and the settlement of Utah. Snow's legacy continues to inspire generations of Mormons and students of American religious history.
