This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when General Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867-1951) entered Helsinki, Finland (then known as Helsingfors), in 1918, following the Finnish Civil War. Having served in the Imperial Russian Army, Mannerheim returned to Finland in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, opposing the new communist regime. He quickly became an officer in the Finnish Army during the civil war period, and later served as Regent from 1918 to 1919 and President from 1944 to 1946.
