English and Scottish Soldiers on Crete

English and Scottish Soldiers (more specifically the Seaforth Highlanders and Highland Light Infantry) on Crete. Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected and a national government was set up, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George, was made High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of peace and unity amidst the complex political landscape of Crete in 1900. The image features English and Scottish soldiers, specifically from the Seaforth Highlanders and Highland Light Infantry, stationed in the historic city of Iraklion. At the time, Crete was still under Ottoman rule, despite Greece's successful annexation attempts in 1897. The Great Powers intervened, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian, and Italian areas of control. In this scene, we see soldiers gathered around a fountain, taking a break from their duties as peacekeepers. The Seaforth Highlanders and Highland Light Infantry, both renowned for their proud Scottish heritage, are depicted here in their distinctive kilts and tartans. The presence of these soldiers was crucial in maintaining order and preventing any potential conflict between the Muslim and Christian populations. Prince George, who was made High Commissioner of Crete, oversaw the establishment of a joint Muslim-Christian assembly, which was part-elected and part-appointed. This assembly was designed to help govern the island under Ottoman suzerainty. Despite the political complexities, moments like these demonstrate the human side of history, as soldiers from different backgrounds and nations came together to maintain peace in a turbulent region. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical context of Crete during a pivotal period in its history. The image is not only a testament to the soldiers' dedication and service but also a reminder of the intricate web of international relations that shaped the world at the turn of the 20th century.
