EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Emir Faisal, future King of Iraq, during his pivotal role in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in March 1917. The image was taken at Wejh, now in Saudi Arabia, a strategic port city that served as a key base for the Arab forces during the First World War. Emir Faisal, dressed in traditional Arabian attire, stands confidently amidst the arid desert landscape, exuding an air of royalty and determination. Born in 1883, Emir Faisal had become the leader of the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans in 1916, following the Sharif of Mecca's call for Arab unity against Turkish rule. After the successful capture of Wejh from the Ottomans, Emir Faisal became the King of Syria in 1920, but was later expelled from Damascus by the French. In 1921, he was installed as the King of Iraq, with the support of the British. The Arab Revolt, which lasted from 1916 to 1918, was a turning point in Middle Eastern history, leading to the end of Ottoman rule and the emergence of new Arab states. Emir Faisal's leadership and vision played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East during the early 20th century. This photograph is a testament to his courage and determination in the face of adversity, as well as the complex geopolitical realities of the war time Middle East.
