EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the regal beauty and grace of Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sisi, the wife of Albert I, King of the Belgians. The image, taken in 1876, showcases Elisabeth in her prime, with a delicate and elegant expression that belies the strength and determination she brought to the Belgian monarchy. Born in Munich, Germany, in 1837, Elisabeth was the daughter of Maximilian II of Bavaria and his wife, Marie Anne of Austria. She was known for her striking looks, with her long, golden hair and piercing blue eyes, which earned her the nickname "Sisi." Elisabeth married Albert I in 1859, and the couple had four children together. Her marriage to Albert was not an easy one, as Albert was known to be a heavy drinker and womanizer. However, Elisabeth remained devoted to him and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the Belgian people. She was a patron of the arts, a supporter of education, and an advocate for women's rights. Elisabeth was also known for her love of nature and her passion for riding and hiking. She would often escape the confines of the royal palace to explore the Belgian countryside, much to the dismay of her husband and the Belgian court. Tragically, Elisabeth's life was cut short when she was assassinated in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1898. Her death sent shockwaves through Europe, and she was mourned by the Belgian people and the international community. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Elisabeth's beauty, intelligence, and unwavering dedication to her country and her people. It is a testament to her enduring legacy as one of the most beloved and admired figures in Belgian history.
