EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking circular portrait depicts Elizabeth I, the beloved Queen of England from 1558 to 1603, in her later years. Known as the 'Virgin Queen' due to her never marrying and thus never producing an heir, Elizabeth I is considered one of England's most successful monarchs. Her reign marked the end of the Tudor dynasty and the beginning of the Stuart dynasty. The portrait, created in Dutch Engraving around 1590, showcases Elizabeth I's regal presence and her iconic fashion. She wears an intricately laced ruff, a high-collared shirt that was a popular fashion accessory during the Elizabethan era. The ruff, often made of starched linen or lace, was worn around the neck and chest, and was tied in place with a bow or a lace pin. Elizabeth I's elaborate, lacy sleeves add to her regal appearance. The circular format of the portrait emphasizes Elizabeth I's face and her piercing gaze, which exudes confidence and strength. Her dark, curled hair is styled in elaborate curls, and her jewels and pearls add to her opulence. The background is simple, with a plain, dark background that allows Elizabeth I to stand out. Elizabeth I's reign was marked by significant events in English history, including the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the establishment of the Church of England. Her death in 1603 marked the end of the Tudor dynasty and the beginning of the Stuart dynasty with James I. This portrait is a testament to Elizabeth I's enduring legacy and her place in English history as a powerful and influential monarch.
