This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and pious spirit of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia or Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Bohemia. Born in 1207 as the eldest daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude the Babenberg of Austria, Elizabeth was married at the age of 14 to Landgrave Ludwig IV of Thuringia in 1221. The couple lived in the castle of Marburg, where Elizabeth's renowned acts of charity and devotion began. Despite her young age, Elizabeth's deep faith and compassion for the poor moved her to sell her fine jewels and clothing to provide for the needy. She established hospitals, cared for the sick, and even washed the feet of lepers, earning her the admiration of her husband and the respect of her subjects. Tragically, Ludwig died in 1227, leaving Elizabeth a widow at the young age of 19. She continued her charitable work, founding more hospitals and caring for the sick and the poor. In 1231, she moved to Heidelberg to live under the protection of her father, King Andrew II. There, she dedicated herself to a life of prayer and penance, wearing a hairshirt and living in extreme poverty. Elizabeth's reputation for holiness spread far and wide, and in 1235, she was canonized by Pope Gregory IX. She is often depicted in art wearing a red robe and a crown of roses, symbolizing her royal lineage and her love for the poor.
