This print depicts the biblical event of the competition between the prophet Elijah and the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel. According to the Old Testament of the Bible, situated in 1 Kings 18:20-40, Elijah challenged the priests of the Canaanite god Baal to a contest to prove whose god was the true and all-powerful deity. The scene illustrates the moment of truth, as Elijah and the priests prepare their respective sacrifices on adjacent altars. The priests of Baal call on their god to ignite their offering, performing frenzied rituals in an attempt to elicit a response. Yet, their efforts remain fruitless. In contrast, Elijah's faith in the God of Israel remains unwavering. He drenches his altar and sacrifice with water, seemingly making it an impossible task for fire to appear.
