This striking 1849 print depicts the historic use of elephants in battle by the Maccabees, a Jewish rebellion against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. The image captures the raw power and intensity of the elephant charge, a tactic that proved instrumental in the Maccabees' victories against their much larger and better-equipped enemies. The Maccabees, led by the charismatic figure of Judas Maccabeus, rose up against the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had desecrated the Second Temple in Jerusalem and imposed Greek culture on the Jewish population. The use of elephants in battle was a bold and innovative tactic, borrowed from the Seleucid army. The Maccabees captured these beasts during their raids on Seleucid strongholds and trained them to fight alongside their infantry. The print shows a line of elephants, each adorned with armor and riders, charging towards the enemy lines. The Maccabees, dressed in armor and wielding shields and spears, can be seen in the foreground, ready to engage in hand-to-hand combat once the elephants have breached the enemy defenses.
