EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment of discovery and decipherment of the Rosetta Stone, an event that forever changed the course of archaeology and our understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization. In 1799, during the Napoleonic Wars, a French soldier named Pierre-François Boussard, serving under General Claude-Mathieu de Toqueville, unearthed this intriguing artifact in the Egyptian village of Rosetta. The stone, inscribed with three versions of a decree issued in Memphis in 196 BC, was a game-changer: the top and middle texts were written in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Demotic script, while the bottom text was in Ancient Greek. Boussard brought the stone back to France, where it was studied by scholars, most notably Jean-François Champollion. Champollion, a brilliant linguist and Egyptologist, used the Greek text as a key to deciphering the hieroglyphs. He painstakingly compared the Greek and hieroglyphic texts, and by 1822, he had successfully translated the hieroglyphs. This breakthrough allowed scholars to read the ancient Egyptian language for the first time in thousands of years, opening up a wealth of knowledge about the civilization that had long been shrouded in mystery. This photograph, taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, shows Boussard examining the Rosetta Stone, perhaps reflecting on the momentous discovery he had played a role in. The image is a testament to the power of curiosity, perseverance, and the human capacity to unlock the secrets of the past. The Rosetta Stone remains a symbol of the enduring allure of ancient Egypt and the importance of archaeological discovery in shaping our understanding of history.
