EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the timeless scene of Egyptian farmers using a shadoof to raise water from the Nile River for irrigation, circa 1910. The shadoof, an ancient water lifting device, has been in use since at least 2500 BCE, making it a vital component of agricultural practices in Egypt for thousands of years. The community in this image is located in Cairo, the historic capital city of Egypt, where the Nile River has always been the primary source of water for both drinking and irrigation. The shadoof consists of a long, heavy counterweighted beam balanced on a pivot, with a bucket suspended from one end. As the farmer pushes the other end of the beam into the river, the bucket fills with water. Once the bucket is full, the farmer pulls back on the beam, lifting the water to the surface and allowing it to flow into the irrigation channels. The shadoof was essential for the survival of the Egyptian civilization, as the arid climate and limited rainfall made irrigation a necessity for growing crops. The Nile River provided a reliable water source, but the labor-intensive process of raising water with shadoofs required a large workforce. In this photograph, we see a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Egyptian people, who have relied on the shadoof for centuries to sustain their communities and cultivate the fertile lands along the Nile. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of Egyptian agriculture and the deep connection between the people and the Nile River. The scene remains unchanged, as the shadoof continues to be used in some rural areas of Egypt today, serving as a reminder of the enduring legacy of this ancient technology.
